Do we need permission to be vulnerable? I’m doing something I’ve never done before. I’m breaking out. I’m exposing my deepest heartfelt vulnerability to you. I’m unveiling a piece of my inner self.
Just recently I read an article about the importance of vulnerability. It was discussing that vulnerability is something that most of us shy away from, we try to ignore and we feel awkward and squeamish just by using the word. But, it can be our most potent tool for growth.
The past few weeks have been an incredible experience for me, both personally and professionally.
I have enjoyed the highs of attending life-changing workshops and conferences hosted by the world’s leading teachers of mind-body science, leadership and personal and spiritual development, and I have experienced the lows of being caught up in an energy zapping illness, that hijacked my body for what seemed like weeks. But, what doesn’t challenge you, doesn’t change you.
It has been an incredible couple of months to say the least. A time of challenge, and a time of growth. I have experienced the elation of meeting and creating some amazing connections with leading doctors, authors and health professionals in this field, and being invited to engage in exciting opportunities and professional experiences that may potentially change the course of my professional career, and my life.
I have struggled through the disappointment of a failing body as it fights off an illness and made me terrified that I would not fully recover, like other times before.
I have struggled with the lows and heart wrenching reactions I feel in my body and mind when I witness the horrible events unfolding due to the current world climate and the heart pulling issues that are coming to light as a result of human fear, ignorance and lack of compassionate action.
Mindfulness is a practice that is growing increased attention and popularity in recent times. Research is showing; it not only changes the way you live, it changes the way your genes are expressed!
As we speak, more and more research is being conducted in this field, and the evidence coming out is very encouraging. Studies are showing that regular practice of Mindfulness Meditation and breathing exercises are producing extremely positive results for people’s mindset, physical health, general wellbeing and satisfaction with life.
Life is so precious. All too often we become consumed with the busy-ness of day to day existence, hooked up in the unrealistic expectations of modern day life and overly committed to putting on a front.
We soldier on, making out everything is okay, pushing our body and mind to its limits, trying to hide our self-perceived faults and failures and striving to achieve what we think is expected of us. But all this comes with a price tag. Our most precious asset of all; our health, starts to suffer. I know. I’ve been there.
Did you know that the brain is actually capable of changing itself?
Only ten years ago we thought that the brain could not regenerate new brain cells. Now they are discovering the brain can not only regenerate new cells but it can also influence how our genes are expressed! Given the right conditions and support the brain can actually rewire and reprogram itself.
In all my years of training, researching, and practicing as a health professional, I always come back to these three core principles: Self care, Do something you love, Connect.
They have provided the constant undercurrent of my practice, and are now my personal ethos for life
After many years using these key principles to guide my patients to better health, function and living, I now make them a part of my own life mantra. I am finally walking the talk… Yes, it took awhile, but I eventually got there!
I have a genuine understanding from my own personal journey that although it is easy to teach these principles, it is not necessarily easy to honour them and bring them into play in your own life. It took me a long time to really ‘get this’. But it doesn’t matter how long it takes. What matters is that you are willing and open.
This is the million dollar question.
Most people recognise they need to make changes in their life. Most people know that smoking is bad for them, too much unhealthy food will eventually make them sick or overweight, working 14 hour days will make them tired and unhappy, sitting all day will cause injury and pain, and unhelpful thinking will lead to feelings of depression or anxiety. But what is it that truly makes people change their deeply ingrained habits?
